N. Branch of the Potomac, Garrett Co.,MD 12/09/2008

I apologize for continuing to post stream reports in from Maryland streams, but after my last visit to the N. Branch of the Potomac I had the uncontrollable urge to further explore the river. I arrived at the stream on 12/09/2008 at about 10am and was pleased to fish in 50 plus degree weather. Once again the larger rainbow trout were very cooperative as they continually hammered my size 18 soft hackle BHPT. I was trailing it behind a single egg pattern, which I believe was getting them excited to the point that they would hammer the PT. Towards the middle of the day, the wild brown trout began rising to either tiny black stoneflies or midges, regardless a grifth's gnat pattern took several of them. The browns were far smaller than the rainbows, but I would take one wild brown on a dry fly than ten 20inch stocked or holdover rainbows anyday.

As a side note, I also had a very large rainbow take my white yarn indicator off the top as I drifted it through a big hole with my nymphes underneath. It made me excited to throw a large stimulator pattern with a dropper on my next trip out there. Happy fishing to all.
