I have been making an attempt to get out more often and doing pretty well over the last month. Muddy Creek is now just an hour away and I have not been there for almost a year. A beautiful day before a lot of rain hits us from TS Nicole. The Fly Fishing Only Project got stocked at the end of October, so I know there would be a few trout and maybe even a holdover to find. I arrived about 8:30 and left just after 3:00. I put a good day taking my time hitting all runs and pools.

The weather was 47 degrees and sunny when I arrived. It was supposed to cloud up, but that never occurred. Bluebird skies all day long. The water temp was pretty cold at 45 degrees and warmed up to about 50 when I left. Water levels were at 100 CFS and gin clear. I saw a couple of small caddises and a few very small what seemed like BWO's.

I spent the day nymphing except for a calmer run when I tied on some 6x and a #22 BWO just because it seemed like the right spot for some potential surface activity. No luck. The trout didn't take any interest in my nymphs until after 11:30. I had thrown the kitchen sink at them all morning. Finally, go back to purple perdigon (thanks @RonKolman ) and started getting some attention from the recently stocked rainbows. When things slowed down again I switched to a black zebra midge and did well again. I missed several as I was lifting my nymph up at the end of my drift. they would jump at what seemed like emerger. I only caught the recently stocked bows. all a pretty good size.

Muddy Creek like many fall-stocked freestones can be fun. There are plenty to go explore all over the state.

I’m thinking about driving up from Baltimore County to check out Muddy Creek again this weekend. Last time I fished the FFO section. Maybe this time I’ll check out the lower stretch closer to Woodbine.
