I fished from 1-4 PM in the CRFFO today on a 54 degree day. Started with a white Slumpbuster streamer as the water was a nice green color and up a bit at 100cfs. I wanted to cover some water and perhaps entice an aggressive brown on my way to the winter sulking pools, but that didn’t happen.
There was a bit of thin ice in the non currented edges and 3” flats of ice up on the banks. So I knew I was dealing with water in the 30s. When I got to my slow pools I switched over to a two nymph rig using an IPW and #16 black stonefly under a cork indicator. Drifts were excruciatingly slow where the fish were, mending occurred often. The takes were subtle and difficult to detect. I missed a bunch not convinced they were takes.
I picked up 10 fall stocked bows all 12” and under. Probably half and half on the two flies, even after adding glow bug they still took the other two.
Fun day but my feet got pretty cold a few times. Saw a couple other guys out on this beautiful winter day. They caught fish too.
PSA; Muddy Creek wont receive the February winter stocking typical to special reg areas to provide the extended fishing opportunity that the program was designed to do. Instead it will occur in Early March. I suppose to save money they’ve trimmed a few trips and consolidated the stockings. It’s a shame because the stonefly hatch in Feb/early March can be a fun time on Muddy.
