Muddy Creek, York County, 05/30/11

Fished Muddy Creek in York county on 5/30 in the morning. Used a variety of nymphs but the best producer was a fox squirrel pattern tied by a good friend. Found the fish very willing for this novice, and was able to land nine, and lost atleast that many. (7x tippet in the current.) A mix of stocked and holdover trout, with atleast a couple of stream born little brownies that made my day. Very few other fisherman, no one else flyfishing, and the water conditions were perfect. Check out the beautiful colors on this little brownie....Good to know the water quality is good/ improving on Muddy. Seems like it's seeing decent natural reproduction. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to see this stream de-listed as a stocked water, or atleast the special regs area expanded. Just a thought.

Sounds like a great day. IMHO there is no need to fish 7x and there have been plenty of posts on here. Next time fish 5x and I guarantee you won't see it affect your catch rate and won't break as many fish off. I have fished over some pretty picky wild browns in the past week and haven't had any issues with using 5x exclusively.

Maybe I'll go in the middle and choose the 6x, LOL! I've always been a light line fella even with my spinning outfits usually 2lb-4lb test. 5X just seems kinda heavy to me....

IMO after FFing for fifty years 7X is really unecessary for most instances other than maybe Tricos and other minutae. Even then I seldom go below 6X and catch dozens of 18" - 23" browns every season - most on 5X. If you want to use 7X on those little trout that is fine but unless you are an expert in the ability to quickly land large trout on 7X I would suggest going with a heavier tippet to minimize stressing the trout with a longer than required fight.
