Muddy Creek special regs, York Co., 11/3/2008

First time for me at top end of special regs.
Beautiful day, beautiful fall colors, and even a 6 pt buck!! The deer crossed the stream a hundred yds in front of me. I used my "telephoto" with my tiny camera...... fuzzy, but OK.
I tried a hares ear 14, a black ant 14, a marabou streamer 12, a tiny white clouser 12, but no hits.
I caught all the fish on a size 10 black woolybugger.
3 Rainbows, 1 sunfish, and 6 chubs.
This stream is simply beautiful. No trash, no string on trees, no human footprints.
A small midge hatch, but nothing rising for them.

Looks like your catching all the bow bows in the same sections of stream where I'm catching all the Browns. I have to laugh because I have not caught a single Rainbow there this fall, and I recognize the sections you are on. On the other hand, I have yet to see one Brown picture from your visits. So it goes to say, that there are definately two different styles here. I would post my Browns, took pictures of some but this site is unusually hard to upload and down size photos, in bit size, to get pictures on here taken with my Canon DSLR. I'll have to switch up tactics to catch a Bow Bow.

Awesome finally got my file size small enough to get my pictures on here, now, maybe if I use a super wide angle lens I'll be able to get more of the picture in. Or maybe I'll have to limit megapixels to have smaller file sizes. Anyway it seems like you have to do a lot of editing to get pictures on here from high megapixel cameras. Now I know. Problem solved.

I have a Pentax Optio W10 waterproof camera with 6 mp. I download the pix and send to photobucket.
Then before I post the pix, I insert "width=550" just after the jpg.
This way it is a full screen without too many pixels for this site.
My first post had the pix way too big........... you had to scroll to see the stinkin' fish!! LOL prob fixed!

Yea, I never caught a brown in the regs area. Maybe next time.

How about the beautiful buck?

I took your advise and brought a walking stick today. What a workout walking down and up the steep hill......... in the drizzle, with felt bottom chest wader boots! Super slippery on the wet leaves.

No hits today with the woolybuggers. A tiny 16 brown nymph was the only thing the trout would hit. Also a 6X flouro leader!! I think the creek went down another 4" since yesterday.

I'm working on a 14 weighted stonefly. I really hate to put a split shot in front of a hears ear!!

I caught a couple Bows today, and some chubs, but no Browns.

Maurice, how many trout did you guys put in the special regs 3 weeks ago?

The state stocking included 300 rainbow trout along with 150 brown trout 13-17" from the MCTU Co-op All fish were floatstocked from the top to the bottom.

Piney actually is the road that you park along at the lower section. You can follow it up to the top of the hill to Kennedy rd. Then your left will take you on down past Tom's Run to Bruce Rd. "Piney Hill Rd." actually. It's a shortcut. Oh, and I thought about getting one of those little rectangle of Pentax waterproof jobbies. Also looking at the Olympus Stylus Shockproof/freezeproof/waterproof models just for fishing so I dont need to lug my camera and gearbag and tripod. I feel like a prospector, traveling to the goldmine lugging that stuff around! I dress all up in three layers just to sweat my *** off before i make it to the drink.! But, I can't justify buying one for my ol' lady for Chrismas, just so I can go **** her off by takin it fishing, just like she kwnows I would do. If I get her one she'll just look at me and glare 'cause she'll know already that I have secret Grandious plans for it. "Oh , thaaanks for the waterproof camera, honey".

My camera is only 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" It's super tiny and fits in my pocket. Super light and way smaller than a pack of cigarettes.
I bought it 4 years ago. I also got a memory card, so I can take 175 6MP pix before it gets full. I spent $335, but now the cameras are much better and much cheaper. I think the Optios are up to 60 and only half the price. The MP are all over 8 now, but you have to downsize anyway, so anything over 1 MP is good to go.
The most important point: I've been divorced for 5 years now, so I can buy any camera I want....... or any flyrod I want!! I don't have to make up things so my wifey will OK it!
Single life is a good thing. I love to live by myself. I stay up late, with a glass or 3 of fine wine while I tie some killer flies with MP3's on my PC. If I ever want some fly stuff, I just go to Orvis online and have it shipped "next day".
I'm not gay........ not that there's anything wrong with that!! LOL but I'll never get married again unless it's a rich porn queen!!
I have the freedom to do what I want. Next week I'll either go to the Erie tribs for steelheads or go to Island Beach State Park for some stripers. I'm self employed with a couple bucks so I can take a week or two off whenever I want.

There are a dozen trout streams........ actually better than this one close to Pittsburg. Upstate PA is the trout capital of the world...... why would you want to drive down here to catch a stinkin' sunfish?
All the streams around Pitt are loaded with sunfish. They will hit any streamer you toss at them.
My advise: head north to the Erie tribs for steelheads. That's where I'll be soon.

I noticed those Bows have an orangish tint to them....like the ones I've been catching this year...much nicer (looking anyway) than that bluish-purple tint the stockies usually have. Wonder if they are feeding them something different these days....

I noticed and wondered the same thing. The State stocked brownies are also a little more colorful too. I've always noticed in the past that many private hatcheries using the same stock of fish were always more colorful than the State stocked ones. Take a look at the trout in the Queen City hatchery on the Little Lehigh for example. Maybe the FBC did change feed. Mike?

I fished the upper section today, Or should I say I startsd in the upper section, and fished my way all the way down to within a stones throw or so from the lower end where flattens out. Found out where some of those rainbows are hiding out. Those bows were hangin tough in the fast water. Wooley was right on those trout, they would only hit black wooley buggers. Although I did get some hits on a brown and black one that I tied. They would not hit an Orange and black. Or anything else for that matter they would chase the black one right out of the water though. I caught my first Muddy Creek truly wild brown trout. It had great color, a set of razor sharp chompers and took a homemade worm that is a little different than the san juan version. I also caught three rainbows, but I lost a handful too, including a very large rainbow that was definately larger than the 13-17 inches that I hear were stocked I hooked It, and flashed its side and muscled down downstream breaking off my 5x line and.... my only black weighted woolybugger. Oh well at least it was good while it lasted, all of the 4 or 5 seconds. Also caught a creek chub and was concerned about black spots on and under the scales. Looke like parasites I don't know, it was about 4 to 5 inches in length. Slipped out of my hand while I was inspecting it. Fished from 7:45
to about 1:00 Saw some rainbows popping the surface. The rainbows were very colorful and active in the fast water.

It's actually as much fun to tie flies as it is to go fishing!!
Going fishing with a thin leader and only one woolybugger is a bad thing!! Shame on you!!

Not only did I lose the big one but I think some of my woolry buggers had too much material on them making the hook gap too small and preventing me from getting good hook sets on a few fish. I think I learned something yesterday, and I'll try to be more conservative when tying them not to over tie them. I found myself looking at them after missing trout and thinking, maybe just one wrap of lead and less material would be better. They looked good at home, but trial and error is the way I learn what is best. I new to tying this year so I'll get better after seeing them in action (my patterns). I tied my worm on a 14 curved caddis hook with about 1/4 inch of wrapped lead covered by light brown thread to look like the misection of an earth worm. The worm was about 1 1/2 inches long burgundy vernille. Caught the brown on it so that made me feel good. I will continue to tie my worms this way.
