With the impending NOwmageddon I decided to fish this saturday and enjoy the calm before the storm. Rallied a couple others to join me and we descended upon the fly area at Muddy Creek. The flow was up but perfect with crystal clear water and clean substrate. Cold water of course, I presume around 36*. Based on the footprints and beaten path in the snow its getting plenty of use.
We fished from around 1:00p til 4:45p, just as it began to snow. The peace and tranquility of the still, chilling air before a storm is inspiring for me when flyfishing. Today checked all the boxes.
Started by swinging an olive/black/brown varrigated conehead bugger low and slow into the deeper runs, picked up four fish pretty quick, three bows and little wild brown. Then I worked the water down to the others in my party who were working a slow pool with no success.
We all moved on and surrounded a slow pool where Fritz put on a clinic across from us with a flashback pheasant tail. Our presentations and patterns were ineffective so I moved on downstream. Changed over to an egg pattern with a small copper flash back nymph combo and started picking up fish pretty readily in the deeper runs. About half taking the egg and the other half the nymph.
Get out an enjoy the winter fishing.
