Muddy Creek FFO, York Co. 5/1/18

Fished the FFO stretch from around 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Got in at Tom's Run and fished my way down to the long hole below the big rock. Water was just a little cloudy but still had a good 3-4' visibility. Water temp was 56°, air low to mid 70's under a cloudless blue sky. Water level was about typical for this time of year, just enough wavelets going over the top of the rock at the bend to keep it wet.

Brought 11 to hand, long released 3 and missed the hook set on a couple others. Also caught one horny chub. Trout were a mix of browns and rainbows. One brown was about 8", the rest 10"-12". Rainbows were 11" to 14" with one nice ~16"er. Chub was about 7"(if anyone cares🙂. First 3-4 were on a #16 bead head gold ribbed hare's ear which was lost and replaced with a #14 of the same pattern. The last 2 were on a #14 hares ear soft hackle.

Saw a few caddis laying eggs but too sparse for anything to come up and eat them. Didn't catch one to tell if it was tan or green, but size was 16, maybe a small 14. Might have been a productive evening on the surface had I stayed longer.

All in all, a very good day on the Muddy.

Great report Dan. While the flow is a little above the mean for this time of year 225cfs is rolling for Muddy. Especially in the grade change where you fished. at that level fish can be anywhere. Sounds like you had good success finding the fish.

Yeah, now that I stop and think it is May already, I guess it was up a bit for this time of year. My mental calendar's a little off since I'm sorry to say this is the first time I made it out this year. Water was kind of the sweet spot where the fish aren't all huddled in holes but wading was still pretty easy. There were a few runs that in lower water I normally just wade past but today I pulled out multiple fish. One run I landed a brown and on the next cast hooked another. Only thing that would've made it better is some surface activity. All were nice healthy fish that put up a good fight.
