Muddy Creek FFO, York Co, 3/18/18

Fished the FFO section of Muddy Creek on Sunday afternoon from noon to 5. Water was at 150 cfs, gin clear, and under bright blue skies. Air temp was in the low 50’s. Nymphed my way upstream and only managed to pick up one rainbow on a pheasant tail. Around 2 o’clock I noticed several fish rising in the pool above me and found there to be a great stonefly hatch occurring. The fish rose steadily for the next 45 minutes, and I was able to catch three wild browns on a dry fly. It felt great to get the first dry fly fish of the year in mid-March. I finished the day by fishing back downstream to the truck with a bugger and picked up 3 rainbows, one of which being a hefty 16” fish.

Nice report Zack, thanks for sharing. I fished the upstream area and had similar observations, unfortunately I couldn’t seem to ge the buggers to take my dry fly. Good on you. I caught a nice heavy brown and a half a dozen bows and missed a bunch. Lots of guys out, saw five upstream, heard the lot at the bottom was full too.

Great flows and active fish, can’t beat it.

nice report guys - does muddy creek fish through the summer or does it get too warm ?

July and August can be iffy during hot drought years...but some guys fish it in the am if the temps stay in the low 70s mid day.

Very nice report, Zach. Lots of good information. Great to hear that you busted some on top already this season. Nice job!

There are alternatives........The South Branch should fish well all summer, particularly in the approx. six mile long Section 01, which has a nice population of wild Browns. So planning ahead, you might want to take a little time to seek landowner permission for future fishing when you happen to be over at Muddy Ck for the day.

Leibs Ck, Section 02, trib to the South Branch, is also good and supports a nice wild Brown population.

Thanks Maurice, I will take a ride out there in the early summer as I've never fished it.
