Muddy Creek at Tom's Run York County 10.19.14

As suggested by Maurice we made the trek to Muddy at the section where the FF only section begins. Air temp 55 and water temp 53. Sunny with puffy clouds but winds high at 24 MPH. Once we made the turn towards Tom's Run we were sheltered from the wind. Fished with my 30 year old first born. Excellent. Fished a number of wet fly patterns but had little success until I tied on a glass beaded pheasant tail wet. Got one stocked and one wild brown. PPS to Maurice what is the meaning of the 52.8 white post by the rail road track? Great day on the water great drive home rocking to Soul Sacrifice on XM Radio. PS The Cabelas Guidewear finger-less gloves rock this time of year. Pricey but worth it.

Nothing quite like bushwhacking your way up to the mouth of Tom's Run from the lower parking area. Recommendation if you go back and water levels are low enough. Walk the path until it peters out hundred yards or so below the big rock hole. Cross stream at that point and wade shallows up to the bend. Look for place to cross stream back to the other side and then continue up bank. Better than fighting your way along the old railroad track. Good leg workout too. On your way back, just stay in the water as much as possible including going downstream through the long flat. How were the leaves in all that wind?

It wasn't the leaves as much of those big green balls falling into the stream scaring the crap out of you KERPLUNK

Those are Osage Oranges. Those are pretty cool. That's a southern PA thing. I don't see those in northern PA.

Yeah thats a walnut tree...Haha. About gave my brother a heart attach the other week. Imagine if one hit you on the head.

So Fade, How many times did you have to rest going up the hill? I can tell my degree of health by how many times I have to stop. I usually rest once now for just a few minutes.

We used to bucket the fish down over that hill....about 10 -15 guys in bucket brigade style.

So did your boys catch any? Were they rising at all?

Mo stopped 3 times going up. I will volunteer to clean up the path. Saw two or three risings. Not sure how old you are but fishing with adult sons makes it all go full circle. My oldest son (30) is going to make the trip with us to the Bitterroot next July. Passing along a passion to our children is a reason to live. Again thanks to you DKile and all the MODS for giving us a place to express our thoughts and comments about something so dear to us as well as a place to make us better at a sport we love. Hey guys, just wanted to add my two cents to this thread. I'm new to the website/forum, but I've been an "anonymous" viewer for a couple years now. Finally signed up for an account!

I finally got the chance to fish Muddy Creek for the first time a couple of weeks ago, after reading extensively all the great reports (from sites like this.) I've got to say, one of the best streams I've seen and fished in the Central PA area. It did NOT disappoint. The 1:15 drive from north Harrisburg was definitely worth the trip and I'm looking forward to the next time I can get down there.

I had a fairly productive day, a dozen fish in three hours, or so, and the whole gamut from fallfish and sunnies to natural browns (5) and one hefty rainbow. (I'll include a pic.)

For anyone that's interested, a few friends and myself started our own enthusiast blog (The Black Gnats) a couple years ago when I got into the sport.
