Mountain Creek, Cumberland County, 6/15/2011

Fished upstream from Laurel Lake and downstream from Fuller Lake on about a 1/2 mile stretch. Started around 730 AM and finished up at about 10 AM. The weather was slightly cool but the sun was peaking through as the morning progressed.

Found a few nice pools and the water was running very clear. Tried to encourage a couple small trout to take a hit but they wouldn't respond. Moved on and spooked a few because of my lack of stealth.

First time fly-fishing in a dozen years so it felt amazing to get out and demonstrate tons of rust. Lost a few flies, poor casting, tangles. The good stuff 🙂 The best part was trying to encourage those trout in the one pool and the perfect weather for a walk.

Just glad to get out of the house with and explore since my getting out of the service. If anyone has any hints for Mountain Creek, let me know. Take care all.

Dear ArcadeFire,

Mountain Creek can fish very well when the fish are active and when they are not active you'd swear it had no fish.

This time of year it's a good idea to try a light colored mayfly like a Sulphur or Cahill. You can also try ants and crickets or caddis dry flys and small attractor flies like Humpy's or Trudes. Any of the flies mentioned above in size 14 to 16 should make some fish rise.

Work you way slowly upstream casting to all the spots you think will hold a fish, if you are patient the fish will come.

Is Mountain Creek the one that runs thru Pine Grove Furnace St Park? If that's the case, I fished it last year and I've never seen Browns so spooky as the ones in the slower pools on that stream. As soon as I stuck my head up over the bank they'd scatter. My buddy had good luck with nymphs or green weenie type flies in the faster riffles, usually under overhanging brush. Im thinking that the faster broken water made the trout feel more comfortable.

Now if that's not the stream im thinking of, disregard the previous.

Yes.
The two local TU chapters have partnered for the last decade or so to place limestone sand in the headwaters to mitigate the creek's naturally high acidity and results are paying off.

Thanks a lot for the advice on flies and the encouragement. I started off with attractors but then again my rustiness was the biggest hurdle for me. It was to the point where fly selection was a minor point haha. But it was a good time and look forward to hitting it up again soon and work on the same stretch of stream. I will stay the course! And thanks again for the best wishes.

Yes, that is the stream. I spooked a few larger trout very easily. I approached the stream's edge and one was on the other side of the creek and he just swam away laughing at me. The smaller trout in the pool were protected by a large rock and my angle of approach allowed them to not see me. I tried to get a response with a Sulphur but no dice. Then I tried a bead head nymph to no avail. Was going to switch again, but by the time I was done, they had left. I know what you mean about spookiness, especially in the one section with a sandy bottom and it was crystal clear.
