Mountain Creek, Cumberland County 4-6-13

Fished from below the Hempt brothers entrance downstream to the houses. About 11:30am - 3:00pm. I guess this land is all within the Mt. Holly Nature Preserve now. Stream was low and very clear. Tossed an assortment of streamers into likely looking snags, undercut banks, riffles, etc. Not much luck. There were probably about 50 trout stacked up in a hole under a half submerged tree that spans the creek. Other than that I saw a few in another small hole and two others that took my olive woolly bugger. Caught one stocked brookie on the venerable bead head green weenie. Saw one other fisherman and really not a lot of evidence that the stream was hit hard over the opening week. There must be more fish in that stretch but I wasn't seeing them or moving them. This is a beautiful stream in that stretch. About as "mountainous" as you're going to get in South Central PA. Random early black stone flies were the only hatch activity I saw. Couple of small rises that may have been chubs.

Lots of guys along the Yellow Breeches between Dillsburg and Mt. Holly.

I was there yesterday briefly too (downstream). There were a lot of cars in the am but few fishermen when I returned on the afternoon. Reports I heard was that the section was pounded on opening day (which is typical). I too saw the stoneflies but there was no surface activity. Got a couple fish on a nymph but it was slow. Stream could use some rain.
