Morning on crumb creek 7/3

Decided to explore a section of crumb Creek that I have never fished. I cut in just above the route 3 bridge and worked down with the intent to fish it down to where it hits Springton, ( I didn't make it that far ) . I have fished above it quite a few times near the covered bridge and thought I knew what to expect but this section was way more silty and stones getting in my water shoes plagued me making walking not super fun and with a 3 ' vertical bank on both sides there was no getting out . I started early am with a dry fly and picked a few fish , bumping a doe and her fawn on my way in .

Then switched to a white wooly buger and that seemed to work better on a slow twitch .
Getting a few more colorful and even one eyed fish . ( made me wonder what caused that in the one smallie)

By 1230 there was very little action and I made my way back to the truck just in time to get a call from my pops saying his ac broke so off to Lowe's I went !

I caught my very first fish ever on a fly rod on that creek down at Crum Creek Reservoir.

FWIW - I'm not sure of the exact boundary, possibly below the mouth of Preston Run, but the backwaters of Springton Reservoir downstream of Route 3 quickly become posted and supposedly patrolled Aqua property.

That's a real shame because as kids in summer we used to hike back there from Gradyville Road and camp over a weekend and never got hassled by the previous water authority.

I caught my very first fish ever on a fly rod on that creek down at Crum Creek Reservoir.

FWIW - I'm not sure of the exact boundary, possibly below the mouth of Preston Run, but the backwaters of Springton Reservoir downstream of Route 3 quickly become posted and supposedly patrolled Aqua property.

Preston is where I turned back , obviously name change was done to keep the great fishing secret 🤣or I'm a terrible speller ... it's the second 😉

That's a real shame because as kids in summer we used to hike back there from Gradyville Road and camp over a weekend and never got hassled by the previous water authority.

The one-eyed smallie was most likely caused by a fishing hook. I've ruined a few fish's eyes in my life. It's an unfortunate part of the hobby.

What happened ? Was it stocked at some point ?

No, never stocked by the PFBC, but there was a stretch that was being stocked by some individuals with large RT. They apparently didn’t move very much though because we never saw any during the surveys at 3-4 sites. I’m not certain what your thinking was, but stocking would not have caused a brown trout population to disappear down by Rt 3; however, warmer water temps and the erosion and sedimentation problem that we found could have done so over time. It may also be that the wild BT, if still present, naturally move upstream to cooler water in years like this.

No I didn't thinking stocking was the cause of decline , I more wondered where they came from as I just didn't think the water stayed cold enough in the area to sustain them. Why would they go up stream and not down to springton , wouldn't the res be colder as it's deeper ?

About 2 years ago I ran into a crew surveying the section right at Goshen rd.
They were looking for american eels, found one stocked brook trout.

I miss access to Springton, in the 90's we would ride BMX bikes from Upper Chichester to fish if we couldn't get a ride🤣

I have data from a DEP Survey of Crum Creek from the source to Springton Reservoir done in December of 2000.

There was...and maybe still is.. a private club that used to stock the upper section of Crum Creek by the single lane bridge at Barr Rd and Grubb Mill Rd.. I think it was called Broad Acres Fly Club. But this was 45 years ago.

A little research leads me to believe Broadacres Trout Fishing Club still exists with private water on Crum Creek.

While doing that research, I discovered this group that seems to be committed to the Chester, Ridley and Crum Creek watersheds which can't be a bad organization to look into for folks living & fishing in that area:

Great info , had an hour to kill before the salon and was in the area this morning so stoped back to where I went in above 3 to look further up and see what I could , sooo turns out the land is posted I just never went up stream to see the signs on the trees , sooo now I know . I don't know if are new or I just never saw them .

I grew up in that area and I do not know of any open water on the upstream sides of Rte 3 for Crum or Ridley Creek. Even some of the Conservancy lands that could provide access specifically say no fishing.
