Monroe County Brook Trout?

Whats going on everybody. My first real post so I apologize if I’m asking too much lol.

Going up to Monroe County this weekend, Saw Creek area specifically. It’s supposed to be a weekend getaway with my girlfriend. I am planning the “hike” for the weekend, and I read on an earlier forum that there might be brook trout in the area.

Don’t need anybody to burn their spots, but if you know if there is any decent fishing, within 20-30 minutes of Saw creek that would be awesome. Any information is appreciated.
 
Saw Creek runs thru Saw Creek development. Park at Thunderswamp Trailhead on 402 and hike east, it leads to Saw Creek. To the west is Bushkill Creek; Snow Hill road leads to the stream.
 
I fished Saw Creek many years ago, a friend's family had a place in the development. If memory serves me, the fishing was poor. I'm sure the Bushkill would be a much better option.
 
I don't mean this to at all deter you, as the story is old and I have no idea what became of the situation. Just an interesting side note:

When I lived in that area in the 2010s, I had a good friend that was called to serve on the county grand jury. One day I randomly mentioned a plan to explore and camp around Snow Hill Road. His message was essentially: There is creepy unsolved sh!t going on up there. Stay away.

He said he couldn't really tell me more because of the secrecy of the grand jury, but he then, of course, went on to tell me probably more than he should 😂 As a starting point, think along the lines of a body in a suitcase chucked into the woods.

Creepy stuff! Anyways... Good luck with the brookies!

As to Saw, stick to the parts on public land. Anything private is going to be posted with a high probability of it being patrolled and enforced. Typical of other Poconos gated developments. Remember, it’s usually your parked vehicle that draws the attention.

That said, I’ve fished the area on public land being mentioned, parking at the Thunder Swamp trail access and hiking in. I found relatively warm water (below Saw Creek Club’s impoundment) and slow fishing, but I did turn up a Brookie, and lost a Brown. The trib that enters in that section was a good 8 or 10 degrees colder than Saw, and had a decent population of Brookies in it. FWIW.
 
Growing up on Middle Creek in Lancaster County, a series of ponds and canals took a fairly significant amount of water for about a half mile. Caught a lot of nice bass on those ponds and canals. Hammer Creek around the Mill has this as well. On wild trout streams it's way worse. A nice wild trout stream runs along the road back to Ingleby on Penns Creek. 2 ponds totally block fish passage and have to warm the water quite a bit. And then all the CCC era dams in the state parks. I do like my Poe Valley Lake though!
 
There are MUCH, MUCH better brook trout options in the opposite direction towards Canadensis...

If time won't allow reconnoitering up that way, just go to the Big Bushkill Fly Fishing Only section (Section 04) at the Resica Falls Boy Scout Reservation off Route 402.

After checking in at the BSA Ranger Station to get a permit, drive up Firestone Road and park at the trailhead down to Little Falls. Hike down the trail with the GF to the stream and fish there.

It's only stockers but it is GORGEOUS down there and along the trail.

After fishing, you can stop at the TomX Pub just down the road for dinner, lunch or drinks.

I fished Tom's a lot back in the day...

It's a nice spot, but it gets most of its pressure closest to the mouth so fishes better upstream from the easiest access point.

There are brook trout, but you have to go WAY above the upper Class A limit to find them with regularity. The beats where I always did well fishing for brookies were always private property, but it wasn't hard to get permission to fish if you asked nicely.

The last time I tried which was a while back, it was NO GO unless you were a resident of the local residential community. I tried lying to security, but I got busted when the asked me my name & address... 😎
