Monocacy Creek Opening Day, 3/29/2008

Went up to the Monocacy Cr. on Sat. with digital camera in hand to take pictures of all the wild browns being caught and kept by the bait fishermen. Walked alot of the stream from about 10 am til around noon. I'm both surprised and happy to say that I did not see one wild brown caught the entire time. In fact fishing pressure was relatively light and I saw very few stocked fish caught as well. The water was very cold and clear which probably resulted in the slow fishing. Talked to quite a few anglers who said they hadn't caught a fish. Finally broke out the fly rod and fished a couple hours in the afternoon. There was a breif BWO hatch and I saw several fish rise to them but the whole thing only lasted about 15 min. Tied on an olive B H Caddis larva and caught several on that. Then I switched to a B H Bugger and caught several more on that as well. All were rainbows in the 9 to 10 in. range. The stream is still full of fish due to the low catch rate. Have heard the same about several other area streams. Should be pretty good fishing once the water warms up a little.

I've never fished the Monocacy. Is it in Oley? Do I need to talk to land owners? How's the parking? I'd like to check it out.

I'm from berks originally, and I'm pretty sure you are thinking of a different monocacy.

The more popular monocacy is in bethlehem, I believe. That's probably the one mentioned here.

Sharpie: you are probably thinking of the manatawany, that is near oley.

There is a monocacy near oley as well. Some of its tribs are class A.

you should see the wild browns on an un-named trib to the Monocacy Creek near Oley...........I was blown away by the numbers and the size........I still have never wet a line there...I believe most of the water is on private land......I am pretty sure those fish see no fishermen
