Fished the Monocacy for the first time yesterday. Beautiful stream.
Unfortunately, I can't say much for my success. I didn't exactly expect to kill it, since it was my first time on the stream, but I was hoping for more than the one wild brown I ended up taking. Lost one other as well.
Fished the middle of the trophy regs section from 12pm-4pm. Worked upstream a bit, then mostly downstream of the Briar Patch Rd bridge. Saw a few fish rising in the long, slow stretch just downstream of the bridge, but very sporadically. Mostly concentrated on the runs and riffles downstream of the small dam below the slow water section. Worked downstream as far as where the next bridge is.
Put mostly PT, HE, caddis and a few scud imitations through as well as a couple different emerger patterns. Unfortunately I didn't have any sparkle pupa emergers, which is what I would have liked to fish on this stream. Ended up taking the one brown on a size 14 or 16 brown serendipity, fished deep.
Saw sporadic rises throughout the day, and had a few follows on a size 20 comparadun BWO I threw on for 15 minutes before I headed out. Saw a few other fisherman and no other fish taken. Overall, activity seemed sort of down.
Fished through a few holes that I was certain I'd catch fish in, but no go despite running multiple different double nymph and nymph/emerger rigs through. Overall, a nice stream that -- as long as the problem yesterday was me, and not low fish populations -- I'll definitely be back to fish.
Of course, my buddy who decided to stay closer to home at hit Valley (as usual) was met with incredibly active fish and a 15-20 fish day. 😉
I was pretty impressed with what a nice job the iPhone did capturing a picture of the one pretty brown that came to the net, although I think you have to click on it to see it normal on here.
