Fished the Monocacy at Illick's Mill from 11:00-4:00 with CLSports. We started out at the dam and fished down to Illicks Mill Rd with streamers. Didn't have any luck there and I really didn't see any fish either. We then walked downstream a few hundred yards below the bridge and switched over to nymphs. Good thing too because I started catching fish right away. I ended the day with a dozen 7"-10" browns with a few other misses. All were caught on scuds and pheasant tails. We only saw 1 other guy fly fishing below Illick's Mill Rd. so the stream was pretty much ours. Stream temps were low 40's. No hatches observed and only 2 rising fish spotted.

always liked this section of stream and above. Thanks for the report 🙂

In the spring and early summer I used to fish that section at lunchtime in the late seventies and eighties....I's leave work, travel time was less than 10 min, fish for 45, then back to work. Used to catch a lot of small browns on dries.

Ol' Festus got his first smootch from a girl in 1970 at Illicks Mill. Dang I'll never forget that one.:-o

In the pavilions or at the tumbling fall?

It was a good day on the Monocacy for the middle of winter. I managed to only catch 4 small brownies unlike Fly Flingers dozen. All came on size 16 olive and grey scuds.

I also took the water temp near the Illicks Mill bridge at a culvert that I thought was runoff from a spring and that water was closer to 50 degrees unlike the main flow which was down near 40.

I also did not see any midge activity.

 classic

One of the streams I always wanted to fish, never got there!
