Monocacy Creek, 5/19-5/20.

Water is low and despite rain, clear, at 72CFS. The park seems to be hopping, with the little natives (I'm afraid, its all that's left after the meat takers have worked it over the last couple months) anxiously taking things on the surface.

I had plenty of looks, and a few takes, on size 14-16 brown or grey bodied mayflies.

I left Little Lehigh down there to work through the rest of the park, but lunch times seem to be active feeding times.

Any Sulphurs?

Never did identify what they were taking on top. An emerger of some type by the rises.


Managed 1 subsurface but I had dry fly snobbery for majority of the time I was there.

Sulphurs are starting about 6:30 or so, I took the kids to the park tonight again and hung out for a bit after the wife took them home.

Other parts of the stream seem to have more insects, but there's still pnety of risers. I had another handful of swipes and missed sets (I'm becoming an expert at that) and actually managed to land 3 all on a small sulphur dun this evening.

Don't feel awkward, LL, I practice that park, specifically the areas we were at, just about every day its not storming or below 40o, so you might say I've become attuned to it.

As for the afternoon risers, another guy told me red quills yesterday. I don't really subscribe to pretending to care about species, so "brown mayfly about size 14" works for me.

Agreed on the color of those mayflies. Catskill style was all I could get em to look at.

Little slack let em take it out of the line with a gentle lift of the rod will increase your hook ups. I'd say I miss no more than 20% of my dry takes. Then again I also think 10% of those are last second refusals.
