I'll be heading out to stay at a cabin along Rapid Run in Union County, just outside of Mifflinburg next weekend for the holiday. I've stayed at this place before and fished Rapid Run for a short while, and it was just meh for me. Usually, I will fish Penns when I'm up this way, but looking to stay away from it for the holiday weekend, as I'm looking for a bit of solitude. Does anyone have any info on Spruce Run near the reservoir in the State Forest? Or any other worthwhile streams in the area?

Dear FollowTheBlueLines,

I'd suggest you download a map of Bald Eagle State Forest and compare it to the PA Fish and Boat Commission maps showing wild trout streams. Most of the streams in the forest will hold trout if they hold water at the time of your visit.

If you search previous posts KMS was kind enough to post a link for software that he developed that does all of that for you on one screen. Or you can do it the old school way and just drive around exploring the State Forest.

From Halfway Dam you are only about a half hour from Big Fishing Creek outside of Lamar vis McCall Dam Road to Eastville, but like Penns that will probably be crowded on a Holiday weekend. White Deer Creek can be good with enough water and that's 10 minutes from Halfway Dam. There are many other streams, both north and south of Rapid Run to explore too.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Thanks Tim! I've just been using the PA FBC trout map and filtering Class A/Nat. Repro with state forests, gamelands etc. highlighted and found quite a few spots in the area. Was curious about Spruce Run specificlly, as it looks pretty good from Google maps and appears to be long enough to not be a trickle stream.

Awesome signature btw! have you ever heard Sturgill Simpson's cover of Paradise? It's one of my favorites of his.
