I took a guy from work and his son fishing thier first time for native brookies. They are both interested in starting fly fishing, so before the season startes, I figured I let'em take a shot at these fish; they both (especially the 12 year old boy) like to sneak up of fish, and this would be rewarding for them.
Got to the stream about 11:30 and the fishing started slow. Most fish were in the back pools way away from the current. Water temps were in the mid 40's. Managed a few small fish.
After about 1:00 the air temp was about 50, but the wind kept it chilly. The fish started getting larger, and I hooked about a dozen over 7" and a few small fish as well. All of the larger fish were pretty skinny downs towards the tail, but had round bellies. (Last summer the water barely was moving in this stream, and it has been a long Winter, so I think the fish are starting to fatten back up)
They both hooked and landed a couple fish, and my co-worker was already taking about purchasing a fly rod in the near future.
Saw a few caddis skittering around, and a ton of midges.
