Floated from Confluence to Ohiopyle with DaveS, Alby and Don. Above the junction with Casselman, clear with temps in the low 50's. The early part of the day was bright sun and temps in the 70's but it felt like 90. Saw some small caddis early and we had risers before 8:30 am. Continued down toward Ramcatt where I had a few little smallies swipe at my streamer. That's where things got interesting. Hooked up with bow on nymph as 75 rafts launched...including boats plowing into us and kayaks rowing into our lines.

We pulled over to let the rafters get by us. Our stop ended up being longer than expected as wave after wave came by. In between rafters, we had a few hook ups in the fast water on nymphs but all got off before the net.

The second half of the day was completely different. Clouds rolled in an we were all alone on the water. Pods of rising fish dotted the head and tail of every pool. Some smallish trout and bass were taken by blind casting iso dun. We were well behind schedule and would be navigating some ugly stuff in the dark. Don must have been overheating since he decided to swim a few times. I was rowing as the rain started and Dave was tossing a nymph rig / putting on a clinic. The first 2 casts brought fish to net. Another 5-7 followed over the next 15 - 20 minutes. If it didn't start lightening, who knows how many he would have caught. Must have had a good oarman LOL.

The flow was a little low but sitll manageable. Water temps 3/4 of the way through the float was 64 degrees. What was confounding was the hatches. I don't know if they changed that quickly or if there was a different hatch going in each pool we got into. Hatches seen: caddis in several sizes / colors, small olives, a few sulphurs, stenos, Cahill, iso and some golden drakes. It's a very interesting river minus 1000 rafters.

Wish I could've made it too. Too bad about the rafters. I was thinking about you guys when some storms rolled through Pittsburgh.

Sounds like a great time.

Don and I had a great time on the river with Krayfish and DaveS. We saw a river otter about two-thirds of the way trough the float.

Here are a couple photos...

I just wanted to add a few observation;
First thing that come to mind is this river seems to produce rising fish whenever the flow is "normal" and significantly less so under higher flows. I know I'm not smashing any atoms here but given the chance to fish dries, I will. And in a river the size of the Yough, know roughly where the fish are is a significant advantage.

Next, If you start parking on, and fooling around with every pod of risers, you will never get off the river in the daylight.

Thirdly, I think in the last few years, Saturday was the first time the Casselman wasn't flowing dirty.

And in closing, Don swims better in waders than anyone I've witnessed. The Bikini hatch was probably better than I've seen it. And for some reason, a fourteen hour float vs. three hours of sleep can produce a very tired feeling.

Good times guys. I'm ready to go again whenever yinz are!

Good stuff. Looks like a great time!!!

I actually had the chance to float it with a friend on Sunday but had to bail due to other plans. And as my luck would have it, he said the fishing was good with plenty of risers :-( Few bonus bass as well. One of these days I'll hit the Yough....

Here's a few off of my camera. Finally remembered where I had put the cord.

For some reason I always had this impression that the yough between confluence and ohiopyle was wide and super deep. Obviously this pictures debunk my stupid theory.

One of these days ill get down to ramcat.

Thank you for sharing these pictures and story.

I was lucky to have best weather this year on the floats from Confluence.

Bearski,

August flows are the lowest of the year on the Yough. Much of the Middle Yough is wadeable this time of year, but there are still plenty of spots 15-25 feet deep too. The wading angler must pick his spots and be a little cautious.

We had flows of about 850 CFS on the gage below Confluence.

Be aware the flows normally get increased a little for the weekend to benefit the recreational rafters, so weekday flows can be even lower in the summer.

I have now kayak with a new fishing rigs, its easier to handle than the previous vessel.
I missed sometimes the look of your fat heads and sloppy casts, :-D
