Dear Board,
I fished Memorial Lake last night from 7:00 until 9:15. I was wade fishing down by the Upper Road parking area.
I caught about 18 bluegills and small bass. When I first arrived there was still a slight breeze and ripple on the water. I started with a Clouser swimming Nymph trailing a size 6 Black Sneaky Pete.
I had one halfway decent fish swirl at the Sneaky Pete but nothing touched the swimming nymph so I switched to a yellow foam popper in size 6 and hung the nymph off of that.
Still nothing touched the popper and I had one fish break off that took the swimming nymph just as I stripped the popper. I decided to just switch to a smaller popper and give it go.
By then it was 8:00 and the water was dead calm. From then until I quit I had pretty much constant action. If I didn't hook a fish on every cast I at least had a fish hit the popper on every cast.
The fish were kind of small though and I was surprised and sort of disappointed that so many of the small bluegills managed to swallow the size 8 cork ball head popper completely.
The ball head and the small mouths on the fish made it kind of difficult to get the hook out of some of them even though the hook was barbless. It was tough to get a pair of hemos down their mouth and around the popper.
Judging by the small one year old bass I caught that were 7 or 8 inches and very stout there has to be some better fish in there? I had a good time and will be back often over the Summer. Maybe I'll catch something worth taking a picture of?
