This is my first stream report - so all comments and criticisms are welcome.
I fished the DHALO section of Meadow Run yesterday with my dad in tow. He is not a fisherman and at the age of 69 and has some balance issues, so hardcore wading and boulder jumping were not an option for this outing. I warned him that fishing Meadow Run does not afford the option of a parking spot on the side of the stream, but that you have to hike in a good ways to get to fishable water at this time of the year. I was happy to have him tag along and to be able to trick a few holdover rainbows to show him in this beautiful area...
The air temperature was about 52 degrees when we parked at 6:15 am. I didn't have a stream thermometer, but the water was cold and though the flow was just a little above a trickle, it was not gin clear. On the hike in, I saw a few inchworms dangling from the trees, so I rigged up a tandem nymph rig with a size 14 green weenie and a size 16 olive nymph pattern as the dropper. I used this setup the entire outing.
The only rise I saw was at the first and only hole above the Cascades that I fished. I landed a really nice 15 inch rainbow with all of its fins in tack that had nice coloring. From there we hiked down to the Cascades, we stopped to admire that falls for a while and we continued hiking downstream of to fish our way back up.
I broke off of the trail to fish areas where it seemed accessible enough for my dad to get to. There seemed to be fish in all the "fishy-looking" areas and I managed to catch 5 more and miss 3 or 4 takes. Every fish caught was a rainbows and all except one took the olive nymph pattern. Each fish had beautiful coloring and intact fins, one of the smaller ones (about 5 inches long) had parr marks on it. That kind of made me wonder if it was stream born...
I probably hit about 15 holes with about 15 casts each and I was very happy with the results. I told my dad that fishing Meadow Run is like - using fishing as an excuse to take a hike in a beautiful place.
My dad - tired, sore, worn out but happy, and I got back to the car at 11:15. The air temp was only 69 degrees by then. We didn't run across another soul until we drove down to look at the natural waterslides so I could show him that cool geological feature.
