Marsh Creek Lake, Chester Co., 4/9/14

Fished Marsh Creek twice this past week looking for panfish, bass, muskie, or anything that will take a fly. Haven't seen much shallow and have had a hard time finding fish. The lake is already high from all the rain, even after the winter draw down. Caught a few gills and perch, but no size.

It is a little early to be seeing fish in the general shallows. With the sixty degree days, however, some species should be showing up in the back ends of coves into which the prevailing winds blow, especially when the temps the previous night don't drop too low. The best action on this pattern will come from lakes with members of the pike family, striper hybrids, smallmouth bass, carp, and large channel cats.

I know it's been cold but usually the crappie are staging at Marsh by now in the shallows. A couple warm days in a row ought to get them going if they aren't already. The cold weather has likely pushed the timing back a bit.

The area by the bridge on Little Conestoga rd will be crowded but
usually has bluegill, perch and crappie up in the shallows around now. Just wade up away from the bridge and you'll be fine.

Musky. You're gonna need a bigger fly rod. But for another month, they'll be going ape-poop in the shallows. Go to your closest farm, grab a whole chicken, bungee-cord it to a couple 9/0 stainless hooks connected with piano wire, dip it in chartreuse dye, and throw it as far as you can with a minimum 8-weight rod towards any shallow flats or creek mouths. Strip it back with great skill. Repeat 9999 times. Profit.

Just an FYI, I went to MC yesterday (4/22) and saw a bunch of bluegills, LMB and even a few musky in the shallows. Much more interesting fishing when you know there are fish in the area.
