Fished the DHALO section of Manada Creek near Rt. 443 from about 6:30 to 8:30pm. Air temp was around 80 and cooling and fairly breezy. No water temp but I’d assume mid to upper 60s. Felt refreshingly cool. Midges were the prevalent insect with a few Caddis and light colored mayflies, likely sulphurs? After prospecting for a little with a bugger I switched over to a sulphur dry and emerger dropper when I began to see several splashy rises. Immediately hooked a few chubs.
Went back to the bugger as I moved downstream from pool to run to pool. Finally rolled a few fish and proceeded to land several spunky rainbows 10-12” from the same deadfall pool. Despite my best efforts to spoil the pool with several snags and break offs, I managed to keep moving Fish for some decent action. No risers or spinners materialized so I worked my way back to my car and caught a few more on the way. Not a bad evening.
The exciting part was yet to come as I broke down my gear. As I was fumbling out of my waders, I looked up at movement and was shocked to see a sow black bear and two cubs silently amble across the road. Thankfully no traffic and they seemed unphased by my obvious presence. This was a first for me and a cool experience to see how silently they move without any alarm. A good evening of fishing becomes a special memory.
