The day started out relatively warm (50) after an overcast night, water started at 50 and clear, warming from there. I suspected morning activity after the warm night so I headed out about 8:30.
I took about an hour hike from the access point to a favorite glide. The run is a long tail out with a uniform depth of about 3’ where I’ve always done well in the early season at these water levels. There was a mix of apple caddis, tan caddis, and blue quills starting about 9:30. The fish seems to prefer the blue quills at first then the tan caddis emergers as the hatch gained intensity. I fished a spotlight caddis emerger with good success, the trout would pick the emerger out of a crowd of adults. Most of the fish were silver bullet rainbows 14” or so that would leap to head height when hooked.
I started walking back towards the access point once I saw the first boat appear at about 2 (boats tend to put down the fish that are feeding in shallow water tail outs), fishing as I went to the occasional riser. Things got good about 3 when the Hendricksons appeared. Most of the fish switched over to Hendrickson emergers for an hour or so until Hendricksons spinners hit the water about 4. The fish jumped on the spinners for whatever reason, ignoring the Hendrickson duns, caddis (which had become a blizzard), and blue quills. I fished over some quality fish landing a few very nice ones. I quit as the flotilla of boats eventually hemmed me in.
All in all, a great day especially after last week’s cold and wind.
Looks like the river was blown out by last night’s storms so it may be a while before it fishes good again.
