Really late with this report but figured I'd post anyway since we hardly ever see the Loyalhanna on here.
Fished the DHALO section between the Rt 711 bridge and Mill Run, spread out over 3 outings (2 evening, one morning).
Water was super-thin and clear. Father-in-law went with my youngest son and me one of the evenings and measured the water temp at 66. (It had been in the 50s at night.)
Not much bug activity but a state trooper taking a break in the parking lot (near where the swinging bridge used to be) said that small caddis and midges have been working. We saw some very scattered BWO and
yellow mayflies but nothing exciting.
For the three outings, we totaled 4 trout to hand (2 brown, 1 tiger, 1 rainbow) all of decent size 11-14 inches. Takes were spread out among BWO duns and parachutes, and Adams - size 18 or smaller.
Every fish caught required an upstream angled cast (and 6X - anything else likely put them down.
The valley needs some rain or that may be the last opportunity to fish there until fall.
It wasn't Pine Creek but in all, it was nice to be in trout water for the first time this year (not much of that available in Southern MD). Even though some consider the Loyalhanna to be an "industrial" creek, a lot of stockers have been dumped into it. It's also close to the relatives when we come up to visit.
