Lower Little Swatara

I had the day off yesterday and planned to get some fishing in. I got out in the morning, but after a few hours of no luck—and steady rain—I decided to scout a few spots I had saved on Google Maps but hadn’t checked out yet.


One of those was Lower Little Swatara Creek. I stopped at a few places where access and parking were easy, but I didn’t end up fishing. The rain was coming down pretty hard by then and I was ready to call it a day. A lot of the creek looked like slow frog water, but there were a few stretches that seemed like they could hold trout.


Does anyone here have experience fishing this stream and care to share some thoughts on it?

I believe that stream is stocked, might be worth going back in the Spring.

Fished it once in the SGL stretch. Lots of frog water is right. Caught some Fallfish, had one what looked to be large Brown Trout miss a streamer. Could have been a stockie. Was a one and done for me based on the junky habitat.

I surveyed it in 1981. It was ok then as far as stocked trout streams are concerned and I do recall there was something positive about it. It may have been a transitional type of stream, which would fit with Swattie’s fallfish observation, and I think at that time it may have held stocked trout into the summer. I also think we may have found a chain pickerel or two. I would not rule out the possibility that we found a few wild trout at the upper sampling site, because as I say, there is something positive about that stream in my memory, but nothing so good that I remember it like yesterday. We had worked some Juniata and Perry Co streams that summer survey season as well and those were good enough to still provide me with detailed memories.
