My son convinced me to skip the trout for a day and hit the lower Conewago near the river for some smallies and anything else that would bite. Typical for him, he stuck to his spinning gear and pounded them pretty good on crankbaits and spinners. I stuck with the flyrod, and while I didn't CRUSH them, I had a great time catching a good many smallies in the 10-14 inch range. Mostly swinging and stripping weighted wooly buggers in bright colors. Flashy pearl/white body and tail with red hackle was the hottest ticket for me. A 14" smallie is a lot of fun on a 4 weight. Surprised to see a few sulphurs coming off around dusk. Not in big numbers, but I suppose not too surprising given the water temp was low 60's. The lower Conewago creek warms so much quicker than just about any other Creek or river around. Headed upstate next week for spring gobbler and hopefully hit some decent afternoon fishing in the Huntingdon/ State College/Lewistown area.
