Good point, troutbert. My gut says nearly all the very large fish were from the hatchery. This small limestoner was certainly fertile enough to sustain their size, but I have my doubts if a small stream could grow the NUMBERS of big fish this one reportedly had back in the 70s and 80s.
 
Hardly, and those that are most likely to escape are the smaller fish. Furthermore, electrofishing Logan Branch on a number of occasions only revealed substantial escapement one time, and those fish were small, barely legal RT. What apparently continues to not be recognized by otherwise knowledgable anglers is that Logan Branch had ideal large brown trout habitat in great quantity under the higher flow conditions in those years, a rare condition on Pa except for short stretches of stream, such as the Rt 322 narrows in Kish Ck. Additionally, it had an ideal, large forage base, with the most dense population of large sculpins that I have ever seen. Finally, it was heavily fished as a result of the stocking program and it was by no means a C&R stream. As a positive result, there was not an oversupply of stockpiling small fish tying up the biomass that could have become larger fish biomass in those ideal large fish habitat conditions. Finally, Logan Branch was a direct contradiction to everything professed as sacred by the C&R crowd, the no stocking over wild trout crowd ( due to the damage that would be caused to the wild trout population), and the group that dislikes the harvest of large trout, ignoring the nuances of high productivity and ideal habitat.

That is no joke. It's crazy how many sculpins are in there.

As for the flows, I have always felt that the growth of the state college area has impacted the aquifers. Just look at slab cabin run and try to imagine it next to the stories from George Harvey about that stream.
 
I'm convinced that there's a connection (in addition to habitat) between dense sculpin populations and large numbers of large trout. This is particularly true in the Cumberland Valley. Sculpins exist in large numbers - really eye opening to see how many come out from every weed clump when electrofishing - and they can be eaten like candy all year round and are probably high in fat and protein. It's just a theory of mine......but I think it's true. 🙂
 
The base flow was diminished by limestone quarry operations.

In order to quarry deeper they pump the groundwater level down, which reduces the storage of water in the aquifer that maintains base flow.

Similar problems exist at some other quarry operations around PA. Those who know about Bushkill Creek in Easton are familiar with this.

The pumped water ends up in Logan Branch. But it's a matter of timing.

During periods of high precipitation, when the water tables are ordinarily high, the quarries must pump a lot of water to keep their work area de-watered. So in the periods when the flow in the stream would be high anyway, the flow is HIGHER than normal.

And in periods of low precipitation, such as you often have in summer and early fall, the water tables naturally drop. In these periods, the quarries do not need to pump as much to keep their work areas de-watered.

So, they are not pumping much. And the limestone aquifer, which under normal conditions is the storage that maintains a good baseflow, has been pulled down, so there is less water to maintain the baseflow.

So, in dry periods, which is crunch time, the stream flow is LOWER than normal.

It's a shame to see this happening on so many of our area limestoners. Donegal Creek in Lancaster County is another prime example of a limestone spring creek that has had its flow reduced by development within the aquifer. I just have to wonder with these streams what they will look like in the future. Just a trickle?
 
I fished it 3-4 times in the last 2 years and it appeard really milky.

It's funny in the upper area looking over my shoulders for cars coming before I make a backcast.
