In the old days it was more of a "straight through" type of system, and probably a lot more "leaky" in regard to trout escaping.
I think the same may be true of some other hatcheries.
Good point, troutbert. My gut says nearly all the very large fish were from the hatchery. This small limestoner was certainly fertile enough to sustain their size, but I have my doubts if a small stream could grow the NUMBERS of big fish this one reportedly had back in the 70s and 80s.
