Lizard Creek - Carbon County - 4-1-19

Had a doctor appointment this afternoon so decided to hit up Lizzy after I was done. It was a bit cold outside but the sun was shining making it feel a little warmer. I fished two different holes and caught 6 fish in a little over an hour.

Water was crystal clear and a great level for fishing. I caught all rainbows like the one pictured below and most were on streamers. I did manage a few on a Renegade Fly that is technically a dry fly but I like to fish it like a wet and fish seem to like it also. I bet I catch as many fish just fishing it and letting it swing in the current as I do on top.

Plenty of fish left for all and nobody else was out there while I was fishing.

Lizard creek is the name.... it’s one of those streams that the local club likes to fence off and hold trout derby’s :hammer: :hammer:

Lizard Creek in Ashfield has a playground that is owned and operated by Ashfield. They raise money by renting out a pavilion that is very well taken care of along with the playground grounds. Some of the money raised is used to sponsor a kids trout contest every year and yes for that day and only for the kids contest time they fence off the stream and have the contest. After the kids time is over, they remove the fence.

Its not a club, it is Ashfield that does it for the community. That is the only time the stream is stocked outside of scheduled state stockings. Its a great stream and has lots of access. Most of the better holes are not by the stocking areas. You need to get out and explore to find the hidden gems.

I had this creek on my destination list for SEPA opening day a couple years ago, had directions printed and the works, had to cancel the trip. I think for us Northeasters it may be the closest ATW included in the SEPA opener.

Yup, this one and Mahoning Creek in Lehighton. Another one I like and visit as often as possible. I usually switch creeks each year for the opener between the two until things open up here in the Poconos unless Im chasing brookies.

The little schuylkill river from Tuscarora state park through tamaqua is ATW however it is combat fishing on day 1 and 2. Stay away. Afterward, it is a decent freestone that could be some fun if you avoid stocking days.

The wabash crk and its yellow boy mine discharge enters on the south side of tamaqua to yuck up the fishing. Its pretty well toast for a mile or so downstream from the confluence before you get into decent water again and eventually the Special Reg waters in New
Ringgold

I fished the lizard whe we stayed at Bake Oven Campground. It runs through the campground. Caught a couple stocked Brooke’s. Nice evening to cool off after a day on the AT during 97 degree heat. Bake oven...they weren’t lying.

Bake Oven Knob is one of the best views on this side of PA. Used to go up there a few times a week as a kid as I grew up in Ashfield and could see our house from up top. Its beautiful up there and in the fall you can see all the Eagles and Hawks.
