Little Shenango River, Mercer County, 4/14/12

Fished the Little Shenango today from 2-6, despite all the rain I figured I would give it a shot. Started at the old baseball field on Mercer street downstream from the College Ave. bridge and worked my way up. The water flow was much calmer then what it was Saturday, however still muddy and deep. Started with buggers and got nothing and continued to get nothing along the way. Met a few others along the way who were having the same results. Eventually I got myself to the access right behind Arby's where I took a break and switched to nymphs. Around 5:30 is when I finally got some action, netting 2 bows. Right when I was about to head out I got a snag, which I soon realized wasn't a snag, but instead a friggin carp. As big as he was, he didn't give that much of a fight and I ended up dragging him to shore. After that I figured it was enough action for one day.

Meant to say browns not bows, and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he is a river redhorse or silver redhorse

im aware of that considering i mentioned in my previous post that i believe it to be a species of redhorse

Yeah you're right by saying it's a redhorse, definitely not a white.

I'm not an expert on redhorse varities but I'm guessing it's a river redhorse. Not sure. The Shenango, both upper and lower, and apparently the Little Shenango, has a good population of them. Some real hogs too. I find them pretty hard to catch(although somewhat easy to foul hook), harder than carp actually.

went again today after work...so convenient having a stocked stream 5 mins from your house...went from around 4-6:30 to the same spot behind arby's...got 5...work was crazy so it was extremely good stress relief

I'm jealous. The nearest stocked stream to me is about 25-30min, but much better one's are about 45min away, and wild streams farther. I drive over the Little Shenango every time I head out to the family cottage, but just never tried to fish it yet. I guess it's stocked with brookies too which isn't all that common in that area of the state.

yep...def got some brookies...went today (yes, again haha) with the gorgeous weather I just couldn't pass it up...they stocked again today so unlike yesterday and the day before it was a little populated with other fishermen which made the fishing a little slow...managed two brookies...i took a picture...its not that great..but just to show they are definitely in there

Sweet!!!! You mind telling where abouts on the stream? PM is fine, not looking for any secrets just looking for a good starting point since my only experience with the stream is driving over it(but where you can't seem to park and fish it).

Many fish getting kept today by others? Might hit it and a handful of other creeks this weekend or next weekend. If I go next weekend hopefully some fish are still left!haha
