TIME: Fished from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm.
WEATHER: Mid 70's, mostly sunny.
WATER: Very high flows. Slight turbidity. Temped at mid 50's all day.
AREA FISHED: From Rt 62 pull-off upstream via several access points for 3 miles or so.
FISH CAUGHT: 10 stocked rainbows. 3 brownies (two stocked, one wild). 4 natives. Lost quite a few too.
FLIES USED: Wooly Buggers. Black and brown. Size 10 and 8. That's it.
I was at Franklin on Saturday visiting a friend, stayed overnight and decided to hit Little Sandy Creek on the way back to Pittsburgh. When I pulled up to the stream I almost got back in my car to go home. It was high and off color. Looked more like March flows... even though the area didn't have rain for a few days. It must have been an amazing dumpage of rain previous to that. (Big Sandy Creek was still unfishable!) My hopes for a dry-fly fishing excursion were obviosuly gone. But I figured, since I was there, what the hell... I tied on a big #8 bugger anyway and started flinging. Had my first fish on my third cast. The action was fairly consistent and I was able to fish places I normally don't with a dry fly. No real surprises. No really big fish; the day's highlight was a native of about 9 inches. But it was the most fun I've had tossing buggers--which I usually dispise--in a long time.
