Time Fished: 730pm - 910pm
Weather Conditions: 65 degrees and sunny
Water Conditions: 56 degrees, mostly clear but slightly off color, flow was stronger than normal due to recent rain
Insects: A few Caddis were around from start to finish; sz 18 Sulphur spinners showed up at dark and they were most abundant. I also saw some Sz 10 Yellow Drake spinners at dark
Despite not seeing any rises I started with a dry fly, a yellow humpy. It probably was a little too large but with the off color water and faster flow I wanted to be sure the trout could locate it. I parked at the main lot and walked slightly downstream then fished upstream to the bridge. I had 5 takes but didn't land a fish. They were small. The largest of the bunch did appear to have the bright belly of a brook trout as it came close to the surface and threw the hook. Little Sandy has natural reproduction but I’m not certain what I hooked.
Little Sandy is a nice creek especially due to the cold water but it gets real skinny this time of year.
When I was fishing the large logjam at the top of the big hole I was casting right up against it when from under the log 3 mergansers appear out of nowhere (mother and 2 young). Momma didn’t like what she saw and took them back under and then upstream. I hope they find their way to the Allegheny River
