The weather was a bit nippy and overcast after a cold front paid us a visit last night. The air was about 52 degrees for a high and there were occasional breezes, giving us a bit of a chilly vibe.

Now, let's talk about the water. The stream was clear as a bell, but the water temperature was barely 50 degrees. It was so cold that I had a hard time keeping my lower body warm, and I wished I had worn some warmer pants under my waders. Blockhouse Creek Near English Center, which feeds into Little Pine, was flowing at a nice rate of 75 CFS - perfect for that level.

However, I believe the cold front affected the insect population because there wasn't much action during the day. We did see a few caddis, BWO, and Hendrickson insects on the water at times, but there wasn't anything significant happening.

We fished from late morning until after 4:00, which was a long day, but we were happy to be out on the water. Our team managed to catch several fish using streamers, nymphs, and dry flies by the end of the day. Unfortunately, I had a tough time catching anything and watched my real angler friends catching wild browns, brookies, and bows.

Surprisingly, we didn't see many other anglers since it was mid-week. Along the stream, we saw a muskrat and an eagle perched on a tree for a while, keeping an eye on us.

Overall, it was a fantastic day of fishing, even if the fish weren't biting as much as we wanted them to. The beautiful scenery and peacefulness of being on the water made it all worth it! Always fun to hanging out with @lestrout , Rick Nyles, George and Scott.

Dear Dave,

There are bald eagles that nest on the upper end of Little Pine Lake where the stream comes in. The first parking area on the right above the lake was built for observing them. Next time if the fishing is slow have your camera handy, you may well be rewarded with a nice shot of the eagles.

Little Pine Creek is the only stream I have ever caught a trout on a Green Drake dun and I caught several very nice ones. It was so dark when the fish started rising that I just set the hook on the sound and wound up with several 18-inch fish that if they weren't wild had been in the stream for a couple of years. My brother and I fished Little Pine a lot back then, but it was 25 years ago or more.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

In the first pic is the guy on the left carrying an over-the-shoulder cooler?

About 6 -7 years ago I was fishing about 200 yards or so downstream of that access and caught a really nice smallmouth on a beadhead Prince nymph which had me fooled into thinking it was a trout until I got it close.

I also saw some chub spawning rock piles that were so big with rocks so big it made made me glad I didn't run into any angry chubs as I'm sure they could have kicked my a$$ in a fair fight... 😉

I caught my biggest smallmouth in the canyon just upstream of the gun range. I also thought it was a trout until it jumped about 5 times.
You're not kidding about the fallfish rock towers. We'll sometimes sit on them to take a rest or tie knots when the water gets low.

You're braver than me...

Any fish that could pile up 3" rocks in a pile 3 feet high just to get laid would probably not take kindly to me sitting at the foot of his bed and interrupting his passion...

I steered clear and tied my knots at a safe distance... 😉
