Little Lehigh, Lehigh Co, 08/27/10

Yesterday, with the NB Susky blown and bass fishing out, Afishinado and I decided to tackle the Little Lehigh and lower our sights on lowly trout. 🙂

It's been my hope to travel a bit more in PA these days and visit some of our legacy trout streams - partly as part of a long term art project and partly to break out of the mold of central PA streams. Since I haven't fished the LL since 1987, it was about time. We focused on the reg water and had a very nice day with bright skies and nice temps. Lotsa joggers, dog walkers, and bicyclists were out on the trails. Beautiful stream with lots of giant willows. I didn't get a water temp but it was clear and likely a normal level. We arrived in the am. Many fishermen but no tricos were seen until later around 11am but these were very sporadic and seemed to bring few if any fish to the surface. By mid day most of the fishermen had left. We had success on various methods. Tom got fish on small nymphs. I suppose I caught maybe 8 fish or so, including a 15" brown and a fat brookie. Missed at least as many. All appeared to be stockies and all fell for terrestrials for me. Nice day.

Glad you hooked up with some fish on the LL. I fish that stream more often than any other stream. Sounds like a pretty typical day. You missed the best of the trico fishing by a few weeks. Its been pretty sporadic, and not a ton of risers. Im surprised those Brook trout are still around. They stocked them back in june, and I catch one every once in a while. Hopefully the ones that made it this long will survive the rest of the year. Glad you had some fun.

Sounds like you had a good day glad to see you made it back to the LL after so many years! As surveyor said the tricos are dwindling. But you can always find a fish or 2 willing to play.

Fished the LL today from about 7:30 to noon. I was pleasantly surprised by the amout of Tricos below the foot bridge. Lot of smaller fish but still fun with the 8x. Got some on nymphs too. Al's rats and sunken spinners. Gotta love spring creeks.

I like to catch fish ... with a fly rod ... I use mostly nymphs, and sometimes I use indicators and 6X. I am probably not a "real fly fisherman" either. 😉

But I do like the LL. Great stream.

Nymphs are what happens when your fly gets waterlogged and sinks, right?

When I'm on real stream that gets hatches I love fishin dries. But when I'm fishing a silted in sewage ditch like the LL I fish scuds!

If you really want to catch fish on the little lehigh, tie some tan fur on a # 22 caddis hook, and have a blast.

Yeah and they were both 72 degrees. Didn't even wet a line. Had to return to the LL for colder water. Did you fish them?
