Little Juniata River, Huntington County, 10/5

Weather: Sunny, low 60s
Water: Clearing with limestone green tint, 110 cfs
Bugs: Caddis, Slate Drakes, tiny BWOs
Fish caught: Somewhere over 20 total... I don't count

I took a few days to fish central PA. Started the trip at the Lil J from Baree down to the mouth. Being a dry fly snob, I typically start by taking time to scan the water for rises... looking at one of my favorite flats on the river, I saw none. But from experience, I know Slate Drakes work well as a search pattern. Over the next couple of hours I did very well--catching loads of "typical" Lil J brown trout in the 8-to-12-inch slot. I also caught a few bigger with the largest pushing 16".

Towards evening I fished up from the Baree bridge and came on a sunlit stretch with a deeper run on the far side lined with large limestone boulders that was alive with rising fish. It was easy to see what was bringing them up, caddis (#16ish) were everywhere. I caught about a dozen fish in less than an hour. Fantastic day on the J!

The rest of my trip was a bust... I ended up getting sick overnight and tested positive for COVID. Otherwise, I'd still be out there--rotten luck.

I was out today, nymphing in water I hadn't been in in years. I see why. Only a few good spots in this section above the closed-off road that "Y's" off, up past the other gravel road that goes under the RR. I forget the name. I fished up to where the RR bridge and the deep water cut me off from going further. I got 7. Not hard to count with that few. 1 nice. 3 not embarassing. 4 dinks that wouldn't be out of place in a brookie stream. 5 on my tiny sz. 18 beatis bead head jig hook and 2 on the Walts Worm. 2 Isos seen. Some beatis mid-late morning. A few caddis flying about. I gotta remember to forget to fish this stretch again. For as much good water is on the Little j, it has a lot of flat water too.
