I just spent the last 2 days on the little juniata river, and would like to report that the cicadas are crawling and flying all thru the vegetation along the river. However, very few of them seem to have made it on to the stream. On most of the sections I was on, the fish ignored my cicada imitations.
There was one certain section where I saw some of the flies on the water, and the fish were taking them though, and I managed to catch 7-8 on them. But for the most part, the fish there just don't seem to be really on them yet. Should just be a matter of time.
The buzz that these cicadas make in the trees is pretty eerie - it sounds like a soundtrack from one of those old alien invasion movies. And it goes pretty much all day. Makes an odd backdrop while you're fishing
By the way, the terrestial fishing was excellent - I caught quite a few fish on ants and beetles
