Little Juniata River, Cambria County, 5/26/2011

Got to the Little J above Spruce Creek about 5:00 P.M. Water level was good and just a bit milky, temperature 64 deg. Another fisherman and I were within hailing distance for about an hour and one half. I caught a 13" rainbow on 1 #18 flashbach pheasant tail and he had on on on a similar pattern. That means fihing was pretty slow. An occasional rise ,every 15 minutes, and a few sulphurs, very few, hatching. I watched a large tan/grey mayfly drake ride a nice pool for over 50 yards and disappear into a rapids without a fish surfacing. Fished until 8:00 and then a long ride home.

Ya should have stayed for the last 15 minutes of light. Prime time.

Yep, when we were there for the JAM, the spinners started to hit the water right around 8-8:15. That's the best time of day for the fishing. Rusty spinners in the appropriate size is all you need.

I'd have to agree with both of you. I sort of just fish during the day to kill time until the spinners show up. Easily my most reliable fishing, Dry fly wise.

I agree with everyone else , the last half hour of daylight has been the best time to be there . Ronnie left about an hour too soon

yeah Ronnie, guess that was me you shared that stretch with. LDR'ed that one on a sulphur nymph, then picked up another right after you went for your jacket. Switched over to sulphur dry after a bit and picked up one more random riser.

Action at dusk wasn't nearly what it was on Tuesday night. I had three slurpers stacked in an eddie on the far bank with heavy current in between...missed more than one of them, tricky drift for sure in the fading light. Came off the water around 9 with few if any fish on the rise in the more open water. Tuesday I picked up 4 on top from 8:30 to can't see #OOPS# anymore o'clock, last was a 15" brown that got the reel screaming on the first run, good times. Action was definitely slower Thursday eve.
