Little Juniata River 04/09/2016-04/10/2016 (with video)

Got out with my father last weekend on some of the sections near Pemberton, caught good numbers on the surface on Blue Winged Olives, despite snow, winds, and chilly conditions. Sunday, had some luck on the surface, but after several short strikes and misses on the dry fly alone, tied a wonder nymph trailer off the back, and it was like candy to them.

Heading out after work to check out the grannom situation, have heard everything from "they're on fire" to "wait another week". Sunday saw some here and there, Monday my father went down and saw bugs and some fish rising, but very finicky.

You never know, but imo judging by water temps, and what the weathers looking like this weekend hatches should be timely.
Sure have spent lots of time at the vice prepping for it!

Fished a spot on the middle portion of the river 5:30-8 last night. Saw two fish rise before I even stopped my truck, and knew it would be decent. Early on had a darn near blizzard grannom hatch, but only caught a couple of fish on the dry fly alone, the fish are keying in on twitching and skittering. Also would highly suggest an emerger dropper off the dry, noticed most of my fish early on were taking the emerger. Was a pod of nicer fish in some broken water under a tree that were just waking, swirling, and just dimpling on the surface, after casting over these fish with the dry alone for about half an hour, and having no luck, put the emerger on, and caught three of them, including one nice chunky one around 17. As the sun went down, had more luck on the dry, and the rises were much more explosive.

After last year's disappointing grannom hatch (everytime I could fish it, the river was high), very happy to see the resurgence this year.

Good to hear the hatch is going strong. The grannom pupa during the day will sometimes drift just under the surface for long periods of time before being able to emerge through the meniscus. This is why soft hackles are favorites to many during this hatch. In the evening the egg laying females return to the water, and dry activity can really pick up again as they pick out the spent ones.
Probably looking to see many anglers on the water this weekend, I really don't know anyone who isn't going. 😀

Nice video. Looks like you had a great time and the fish were willing. I am planning a trip there in a weekend or two. Where is the Pemberton section of the Little J? I've only fished the Barree area.

Havent been able to fish the lil j sense the grannom hatch.

Has anyone been out yesterday or the day before? Tan caddis coming off yet?
