Fished 2-5 PM a ways above Spruce creek, surprised by the number of cars and fishermen but no problem finding room to fish. Air temp 63, water temp 50, flow 380. Crazy weather with dark clouds, sprinkles then bright sunshine alternating. But happily little wind. Stream was beautiful with 3-4 feet visibility. My son-in-law and I fished a long flat pool with nice even current.
Little action initially, mostly casting practice, saw a few fluttering tan caddis #14-16 at times but few rises. Then a small grayish 16-18 mayfly fluttering and launching with some trout chasing, could't ID maybe BWO. (sorry never got a close look, and I'm an awful entomologist). The fish laughed at my imitations. Then about 3 PM a small sulfur showed up, fish wouldn't take my #14, but got a few bumps on a 16 split wing but a thousand refusals. After 30 minutes sulfurs were everywhere they looked a little bigger and dozens of trout working around me regularly, some head and tailing, some boiling and some splashing and jumping. Still ignored my #16 although it looked pretty good riding in the armada. Guys up and down the stream seemed to be having the same problems, complaining about emergers. Probably should have tried a dropper. Finally steered my fly into 3 open mouths, nice browns 10 to 13. They are really beautiful fish in good shape.
My son-in law is a beginner, really hoped he could have caught the bug today, all the elements were there except the right fly, as he casts pretty well. I told him he has to pay his dues. Lucky for him (and me) he lives in State College so we will try again soon.
