Decided to head over to the j last Friday under close to ideal conditions for this time of year.
Section fished: upper c&r, close to tyrone.
weather: cloudy, with a high temp around 78. The overnight lows the previous 2 nights were in the upper 40's to low 50's.
Water conditions: flows were around 400 cfs, average for this time of year. Water was pretty clear, visibility was around 4 or 5 feet. Water temp was 61 at 1:30pm, and this section of river is above almost all of the major coldwater springs.
hatches: I didn't see many bugs at all, one or two caddis, one olive, and one white fly.
Time fished: 1:30-5:30pm
fishing: started out blind casting with a slate drake dry, but quickly switched to nymphs as dries weren't producing for me. I worked my way down to one of the heaviest, steepest, and most narrow riffles on the upper river, and rigged up a tungsten sulphur nymph with a green honeybug up top of a dropper. In the first hour, I hooked around 8 fish, landed 2 in the 11-13 inch range, and lost a real nice fish around 16-18. Despite the lack of hatches, it felt like springtime. after that, the fishing really slowed down for me. In the last few hours I only hooked 1 more, another small brown. I headed down to spruce creek near the usgs guage (a section I rarely fish), and threw some nymphs and streamers for the last hour or so. Didn't catch any, wading was very difficult at those flows even for the j. Overall, it was a pretty good day on my favorite river. It was also interesting to see that less than 12 hours after I left, the river went to over 5000 cfs (just shy of flood stage). Should be fishable again by this Thursday or friday.
