Went up to PSU on Sunday to start hauling stuff back from college and made my way to the Little J on the way home. I arrived about 2:00 and settled in a ways north of where Spruce Creek enters. I saw a few cars and anglers, but not as many as I might have thought. At my parking spot there were about four cars and only saw about seven people all day.

Conditions:
Mostly sunny with some high clouds passing over time to time and really no wind to speak of. The air temp was about 70 degrees, water was very low for this time of year and clear (220 cfs). Mixed hatches of caddis and mayflies all afternoon into the evening. Small tan caddis and larger dark caddis (grannoms) were slowly, but steadily coming off. As the afternoon progressed an increasing number of larger sulphurs were emerging into the evening as it got dark. The trout were taking both steadily all day.

A bit of frustrating day with so many steady fish rising. I made the mistake of staying put and casting to the risers in the slower water. I tried every size and variation of sulfur, caddis, adams, Hendrickson, Cahill that made sense while watching the surface activity. I had a lot of time to watch the surface as I was not catching any fish. I skated flies, danced the flies and talked to myself a lot.

The water was pretty still and should have moved down stream. Just too stupid and determined to catch the fish that were in front of me. Finally as it got later things improved for me once in the faster water and I moved around. When leaving I went back to the flatter water and skated a few mayflies into the same area I was earlier and pulled out some really nice sized fish 16"+. Really shocking as the water in the one section was barely one foot deep. The low water has the bigger trout in some unusual spots.

Note to self: move around earlier and throw your away old tippet. Bonus saw a young eagle grab a trout on the water.

Can't believe that placid looking stream is the Little J. Last time I was there in June of 11 it was fishable but really moving. Very difficult to wade. Seems like this season is just slipping away with the warm temps and lack of rain.

My temp reached 91. Unreal.

I also fished upstream of Spruce on Sunday. We must have been pretty close together. I had great luck with sulphur duns and emergers fishing the transition from riffle to pool. Stay away from the flat water...

Greg

Sorry we missed each other. Yeah I don't know why get so lulled into risers like that. I had good luck on similar water on Penns the week before. Every day is a little different.

Dave,
I too, fished that section, but on Saturday. At one point, it Started to rain, I had to walk away from rising fish to get my rain jacket. (That ain't easy) To my astonishment, I was the only car in the lot!
If I could have talled all the rising fish I saw that day... It would be a very large number. To your point though, I got pretty tired of the flat water, and did much better where the current was faster.

Dave,
Never knew sulphurs came off so early in the season in Central PA.
I used to go up in early to mid May for them. Maybe caused by the weird weather this year?

thats exactly why.... they are super early this year

I think we are all a little surprised with all the hatches looking to be about two weeks early in much of the region. I really thought this might have slowed down, but March Browns are showing up now too.

The mild winter and very warm March put a little gas on the fire.

Bruno... you're officially 2 weeks late on that call...

Early to mid-May is the normal start time. Between roughly May 4 and May 10 for the big (#14) early sulphurs.

This year things are running WAY ahead of normal schedule. About 3-4 weeks ahead. Closer to 4 weeks, IMHO. I've never seen things run earlier than this year.

Well, I'm missing most of it. 🙁.

Except, I think I'm making a big trip late next week. Wife going to her families for a while, taking the baby, leaving me free. Plans currently in the making. Woohoo, I'm getting in on this action!

So, I'll call it now. Big rains and cool temps this weekend and early next week. Since everything's ahead, all hatches pause for a while. The hatches that are supposed to be prime just end till next year. The one's that aren't supposed to have happened yet take a week or so off and get closer to a normal schedule. The fewer bugs and the cooling streams turn the fish off.

It's just my luck. It'll pick back up afterwards, at least till the jam. 🙂

So what did you major in? What degree do you have?

He was picking his kid up from school.

dkile runs paff. Come to the JAM and meet him. Great guy!

I graduated from IUP. I started with a comp sci major and ended up with a degree in Geography which I never used. Daughter is at University Park. When I go up to see her I hit central pa water. Heading back up first week of May when she is finished for the semester.

I am going to use this method when I convince my daughter to go to the University of Montana ;-)
