Fished a few miles above spruce creek from 1pm to about 730 or so.
Weather: air temp was about 78, partly cloudy and humid when I got there and mid 80's by 4pm.
Water conditions: around 130 cfs, low for this time of year. Water clarity was just slightly turbid from overnight storms. Water temp was 66 when I started fishing.
hatches: sparse tan caddis (16-18), a few tiny olives (20-24), sparse midges, and one lone golden stonefly. I did see some iso nymphs darting around near the shoreline in spots, but none hatching. Also a few cahill spinners in the evening. Overall very little hatching relative to what those who frequent the j have seen recently.
fishing: started out with a green honeybug and sulphur soft hackle and picked up 4 or 5 on the honeybug in the first hour or two. Mostly smaller fish in the 7-10 inch range. After getting to one of my favorite low water nymphing stretches on the river, I switched my top fly which was the ssh to a sz 18 sulphur nymph. I caught a couple more small ones, and then hooked a nice 14 inch brown which didn't fight at all, pretty much like a wet sock. After releasing it it just sat in the current right next to me, definitely looked stressed. I took another water temp around 69, and decided to stop nymphing. I saw a few risers in the pool below me and decided to fish my way back to my car throwing terrestrials. I threw ants, beetles, and an inchworm with no looks. There was 4 or 5 cayaks that came through the pool I was fishing which didn't help things. When I left that spot it was only 5pm, so I decided to head a few miles upriver where I know the water is colder. Water temp there was 65, the highest temp I've ever recorded for that stretch. (The high humidity, high overnight lows, and warm overnight rain are the main causes Im sure...). Since I had my dry fly leader set up(16ft, 5x), I decided to throw terrestrials some more. Fished the same ensemble of terrestrials as before with no looks. I even threw a large cdc cahill pattern to try to drum one up but still no looks. decided not to stay for the possible spinnerfall late in the evening. After how exceptional the fishing was on the j this past month, its hard to accept that the j is finally settling into summer mode, but it was still nice to get out on the river.
