All I can say is Wow! AcristicKid has been after me to get out and fish the cicada emergence, and I'm glad I finally did. Tough to beat catching fish on a number 6 dry fly using 2X tippet.
My cicada immitation was green, but I compared it to the real thing and it was the right size and profile. The fish didn't seem to care that it wasn't black and orange. I also used a black zoo cougar to imitate a drowned cicada and caught a few fish on that as well.
I arrived around 1PM and caught a few fish in Acristic's secret honey hole. I thought I'd try my luck elsewhere. The next spot produced a few rises but no hook-ups. I tried to stop at the Spruce Creek Fly Co. to get some proper black and orange cicada immitations, but they were closed this afternoon. I drove up to try the special regs section on Spruce, and I had a number of hits on the cicada but again no hook-ups. I wised up and went back to Paul's secret spot. From about 5:30 to 7:30 PM the fish really started hammering the cicada dry. I didn't catch any really big fish, but many chunky fish in the 12 to 14 inch range.
All the fish had bloated bellies from gorging on cicadas. These fish should have a nice growth spurt from all the extra food!
I'm marking my calendar now for 2025!
