I was able to sneak out this afternoon (1:30-4:30) for a few hours of fishing and decided to hit my old nemesis: Lititz Run. I parked at the lower end of the C & R area and worked my way upstream into the second pasture. There were several nesting geese past the fence crossing, so I decided to turn around and head back downstream.
The creek is starting to get low and it could use a shot of prolonged rain. The color was actually stained a bit and the pools of the C & R area are starting to become more defined with the lower levels.
As far as insects, I did see quite a few crane flies, some small tan caddis and a few cream midges. Not a lot of rising fish quite yet and I had no luck tempting them with a Griffith's gnat.
On my way back downstream, I tied on a #12 cream beadhead sucker spawn that I tied and worked the riffles and slower pools. As I cast in front of the farmhouse on the Hess farm, I had a very aggressive chase and strike by a nice brown. I wasn't in position to get a good measurement on him, but I was able to size him up briefly against my rod and he was in the ballpark of 16" with nice fins.
This fish was significant for me because a.) after two years and many trips, it was my first Lititz Run trout b.) it was the first fish I caught on a fly I tied.
I saw a few carp crusing around, but other than that, no fish. I wonder how many big fish are left in the lower C & R area? On my way out, I had a nice conversation with a guy named Dustin from New Holland and he told me a story of a run-in he had with guys baitfishing and harvesting trout from the stream not long ago...
