i fished the C&R area today from 11:30-2:30 today. again alot of black midges in the air but no surface activity. only one small rainbow was rising. i did see two browns well in excess of 20 inches. the first one i was low in some weeds next to the stream and thrown a cress bug to him. i got two casts in and one he inspected. then i felt crawling on my neck, it was a spider! god i hate spiders so in waving my arms around trying to get him off i spooked the fish :-( the second BIG brown i saw was toying with me. he is a fish the is at least 5 years old and is in an area less fished by fisherman. (and i think he knows that) he would look at everything but not take it. then he humbly swam up to the bank to me and sat there facing me. almost as if to say, "i know your there stop it already!" he sat there for about 1 minute and swam back to where he was. really funny. maybe he thought i had pellets....but id like to think that he just wanted to let me know he knew i was there :-D i also saw that rainbow that sits in the shallows and ran to the deep water as i was pretty far away. i didnt pack a lunch so i didnt even bother. i also saw a tankership of a bow that saw me also. i have only ever seen this fish twice before and it was in the same spot. i always know hes there but i think he eats only pellets and then feeds at night. he is so wary he hides most of the time.
however! i did catch a really fat holdover brown. this guy wasent as big as the 2 i caught yesterday. but he sure was fat. i have seen this fish eat midges non-stop but could never get close enough to present a fly to him. today i crawled up to the hole downstream of his and in one cast wham! he took a beadhead crystal flash olive bugger. i think this guy eats alot of bugs and the pellets making him so plump! upstream had a holdover brown swim up behind my prince nymph as it drifted down stream. he was a bit bigger. i got him to take it but he came off. i love barbless hooks and sometimes they let the fish win even after they are fooled. its good to let them win sometimes. and i caught a nice holdover bow. he took the same olive bh crystal flash bugger. got pics and ill post them up. did catch some of the freshies but there not worth talkin about.
good luck! :-D
