lititz run (hess farm), 5/24/2009

had a really early start today and was on the river by 5:30 am and started at the down stream side of the hess farm bridge and had lots of fish rising and for the life of me could not figure out what they were taking.saw lots of caddis bouncing on the water so i went from 16 to 18 to 20 and refusal after another tan , green, brown, same story, they would come up look at it and swim away,,so i noticed tiny tiny midges (i think) comming off and covered almost every midge i had and still nothing ( i learned today that my midge collection is really lacking and need to hit the vice ) all and all i got one nice fat stocker size brown on a 18 cdc caddis but like i said i think he was a stocker so hes learning,,lol,,can anyone help me out with the midges that are in that stream. i couldnt catch one. now i know why sal says those fish are so picky i learned first hand today. i would see them come rite up to my fly and then turn away,,anyway the sunrise is always awesome there,

Down there you just have to try everything you have as close to what you see on the water till you get lucky. I had the same thing happen to me to Friday evening at the Hess farm. Wasn't until I put on a black caddis, size 20 till I had one. That was the only one to hook up out of 100 or so rises and 1,000 casts. I missed 4 hook ups after that.
Also got one on an olive wolly bugger right before I left.

Went back again Monday from 8-9pm. Same thing. P,enty of rises and only got one to take a spent caddis dry

Jay the tournament stocked quite a few in the stretches of Lititz Run. You'll have to let me know when you're coming down again. I wouldn't have been able to make it out this past weekend, but from the looks of it it's getting alot of pressure since the tourney. At first it seemed like the stockies didn't know how to eat my white bugger, but eventually learned (or me and sal learned how to feed it to them) then the old fish in there must have rubbed off on the stocked ones b/c now they are pickier then ever even though there are so many visible rises.

I had a small (10") brown stockie nail a #14 bead head prince nymph while fishing in the Conservancy last week. The fly no sooner hit the water than he came out from the rocks and nailed it. Clearly he hadn't learned to eat yet and needed some time in the stream to acclimated. I'm sure the old wise fish will take the 'yungins under their fins and teach them a thing or two...

im pretty sure there taking midges or bwo,,real small,,like 20 or 22 even but i couldnt catch one to see what color i had a few colors but none seem to be the one they wanted,,im also thinking that alot has to do with the fact that the water is pretty much like glass over that pool so there probly seeing our leader as well as us. there is not alot of surface current to break up the water and all the stuff you dont want the fish to see. its a very tough spot to fish the surface,,i guess thats why im drawn to it. ill let ya know what this weekend looks like slay. later guys off to job number 2

Caught 6 total tonight, water is slightly cloudy and around dusk I got 2 hitting on the surface on some sort of parachute fly with a white flag off the top so I could see it. Lost that fly to a fish and switched to a dark colored caddis and landed 3 more. Also caught one more on a bugger underneath and shortly after that one was landed I got a 13" sucker off of a brown bugger. Pretty awesome, I'll try to post a pic tomorrow of that one.

Jay, I wont be able to make it this weekend, but get at me next time you can make it out. I wanna slip up to the Tully sometime soon. Maybe we can hook up in there soon.
