I decided to brave any rain and head to Lititz Run in the hopes of some top water action. Being that I had seen plenty of brown caddis hatch there this year, I kept my brown elkhair caddis dryfly and brown caddis emerger tandem on.
I started fishing around 1:45 in the afternoon and the water was 68 degrees. At the springhouse I spooked a large rainbow under the undercut. I usually end up spooking one of the monsters upthere because they change thier lyes ever so slightly. I did however have a monster brown hooked. He was in the shallows with his back out of the water gorging himself on freshwater shrimp. I tossed that caddis over in front of him and he took it. The fish was so strong when he started to thrash I was helpless with my trout bum. It took him a total of 30 seconds to shake that barbless hook right out of his mouth. He swam fast past me and I saw his double kipe jaw. I remember that fish......spectorfly caught him a few times. He looks more like a salmon than a brown trout.
I moved upstream for a change and fished above the catch and release area up to the conservancy. My buddy had stocked that area years ago with brown trout fingerlings. I did quiet well landing 7 brown trout. Oddly enough they were taking the dry after it hit the end of its drift and sank just below the surface. Oh well, what ever works! :-D This area is nice to fish because it almost gets no pressure and the fish arent as "selective".
Next I went down to the Hess farm and fished up to the "killer sheep field". I caught a few small rainbows and browns on the caddis emerger and dry. kinda split between the two. I do see about 4 behemoth trout all of which laughed at my tandem rig and kept their mouths shut.
All and all it was a good day. The only hatch or bugs I saw were some caddis, plenty of midges and the grasshoppers are out. They are small for now. Just to give you and idea of how these trout wont eat anything.........I caught 6 grasshoppers threw them in the stream at a huge trout. The grasshoppers scurried around to take cover. And that trout didnt even move! Amazing. I know the fish wouldnt have gotten as big so quickly with out supplemental pellet feedings, but Lititz Run is a Limestone Spring Creek and it does have the cress bug and shrimp life needed to adequately support large trout. Its time soon we stop feeding these fish and get a more natural fishing experience on this great limestoner. :-D
