Lititz Run C&R area 5/26/08

We arrived at the stream around 8:00 or 8:15 pm. We wanted to catch an evening hatch at the hess farm but 2 fisherman were already down there (as I expected). We parked at the farmers lane upstream and fished around the spring house area until darkness and rain. Sulphurs, midges and brown caddis were about. To my shigrin the fish were rising tothe brown caddis. We each had a brown elk hair caddis and landed 7 fish 30 minutes. This was very unsual for Lititz Run but also very enjoyable. 4 of the fish were smaller 12-14 inches. 3 of the fish were 20 plus and 1 spectorfly brought in was a fat football monster rainbow. Ill be going back soon of the fishing stays like this. :-D

I've read a few stream reports on Lititz Creek on this site over the course of the past year, and the reports have all been stellar. I'm assuming that the fish you're catching in Lititz Creek are stocked, and in all likelihood the larger fish are stocked as large fish? If these are wild fish, then Lititz Run is not only the best trout stream in the Eastern United States, it's one of the best in North America.

I've driven by Lititz Run on several occasions and have never been compelled to wet a line there.

There are wild fish in Lititz Run but they are few and far between. The stocked trout are feed hatchery pellets throughout the course of thier life because the stream has had a complete 100 biological kill on it not once but twice. The hatches were few and far between. This is the first year I had seen brown caddis infesting the stream and it looks like they maybe here to stay. It is a really good sign and very exciting. DTU has but alot of work in this stream and deserve alot of credit. So over the years the fish were fed because of the lack of aquatic life to feed on. Most of the fish were stocked in the 12-15 inch range and have grown to utter monsters. Then again, that is what happens when a 8-10 year old trout has been bottle fed throughout the course of its life.

Where did you drive by Lititz Run? If it was off RT501 I can see why you have never wanted to fish it. That is far upstream from the C&R area.

You did not miss a whole lot down by the bridge (I was one of the other fisherman). There were a few caddis and a good number of sulphurs coming off around dark but very few rises. The fish were taking san juan worms about a half hour before the rain. What size caddis were you using? My size 16 & 18 didn't seem to get their interest.

I agree that fishing along Lititz Run can be excellent at times; however, it can also be extremely frustrating. I've had many days where I couldn't hook a fish, and I've had other days where I was catching them one after another.

HA! I had a feeling that one of those fisherman might be you. We were the guys in the silver car that turned around in the hess farm driveway. We havent run into eachother yet on that stream but I know we will someday.

The size caddis I was using was a #20 tan elk hair. I too did see the sulphurs. The fishing got hot about 10 minutes before the rain but then quickly shutdown, I would mainly believe because of the surface of the water being disrupted.

Yeah you arent joking about the fishing being hot or very ice cold on Lititz Run. I tell ya though......just one of those fat bruiser fish can make your day though :-D
