Linn Run - Westmoreland Co - 2/5/2016

For my second outing of 2017, I was able to get out to chase some brookies today at Linn Run. The past few days have been pretty chilly in Westmoreland county and I was hoping the weather would be cooperative enough for me to get in some fishing this morning as I saw the predicted temps for today were mid 30's for the morning. I arrived at the stream at 7:45 and the air temp was 32. After realizing how cold my feet were, I decided to take a stream temperature reading and found that it was 34.

I parked near the spring water filling area and managed to trick two little brookies in the first pool I cast with an olive hares ear nymph. I worked upstream to the cabins just below the park office and hooked into two more on an egg pattern. One of which was my largest one of the day at about 7 inches with a deformity with its mouth. I thought it was missing its lip that is below its nostril. However, its lip was not on the outside of its mouth, its outer lip was growing on the inside of its mouth... Otherwise it seemed to be a healthy little guy with really nice coloration.

After getting out of the stream near the cabins, I walked down the icy road to my car and then parked at the Adams Falls area and I hiked down to the big pool below flat rock to work my way upstream. I only managed to land two more little guys one on an white weenie and an egg and I ended up missing two other hookups. I did see one brookie that looked to be 8 or 9 inches, I was about 20 feet downstream of it and it was instantly spooked when I cast over it...

I only saw one bug - looked to be a size 16 black stonefly adult. There were no risers that I came across this morning.

I saw a bunch of really cool ice formations on the edges of rocks and logs and it was a nice morning to get out. I ended up leaving at 11:00 which was about the time that it started to get pretty windy. I also realized that this is the first time that I ever got out to fish in the month of February - so I realized that these 6 brook trout are the most I have ever got in this month.

Good report. I fished Linn Run about 3 weeks ago. Similar conditions. Less successful. We parked near Wilkins Rd and fished up to the cabins.

Between me and my buddy, we caught 1 gemmie in the whole stretch. We didnt even spook anything else. This summer, I drove through the park and most of the stream was bone dry. I was worried that effected the resident population of gemmies. Im glad you got into more than a single fish.

Good report, glad to hear others are finding fish there. I did my first outing of the year 2 weeks ago at Linn run. I fished above the park up in the state forest and did pretty well. I caught 4 nice sized gemmies. The largest, which was around the 10 inch mark isn't pictured. He gave me the slip before I could get a pic. Seems like the stream rode out last summers drought fairly well.

Great report! Awesome to hear that you can still wrangle fish out of there in the winter too. My daughter and I usually fish it in summer when wet wading. We park at Adams Falls, bring backpacks with swimming stuff and fish our way down to Flat Rock, then go down the slides. That makes for a perfect day. It's a small stream for sure but every year there seems to be a new area to explore somehow. It is the quintessential Laurel Highland's small stream for sure.
